September Climbing, Walking, and Service Newsletter

Dear friends, climbers, walkers and outdoor mountain enthusiasts. Welcome to our September newsletter, where we share fun plans for October and November 2012 climbs, walks, and non-profit projects, beginning in only 4 weeks so there is still time to join us. Also we are spreading the news of exciting developments for 2013. Welcome to our team!

How has summer been for you (winter for those of our friends in the Antipodes and South America)? I hope you have been preparing for the mountains, staying fit, walking and climbing in your local hills, not working too hard and relaxing with family, friends and colleagues. Please send me your news and tell me what you have been doing.

My name is Dan Mazur, and I work for
www.SummitClimb.com and www.SummitTrek.com . In this email, I introduce our team, the SummitClimb and SummitTrek company, explain a bit about how we do things, and then list all of our exciting climbing and walking journeys, as well as educational, health, and environmental projects you could become involved in. It has been an exciting and successful year for SummitClimb & SummitTrek and we look forward to keeping up the momentum this October and November.

I am currently writing this email from the base of Dhaulagiri, world's 7th highest and most accessible mountain. Our climbing teams of men and women of all ages, as well as myself, our expert leader Arnold Coster, and professional sherpa climbing staff have just arrived after a beautiful autumn trek with stunning scenery, active wildlife, lush flora and fauna. We feel great and are excited to start moving up the mountain to start exploring the route to the summit. Please go to
www.SummitClimbNews.com to follow our progress over the coming weeks. This is our first trip to Dhaulagiri and a true adventure in remote Nepal!!

Oh, yes, do you have a website and would you like to exchange links between your site and ours? RECENT NEWS: In May our Everest Nepal, Everest Tibet, and Cho Oyu climbing expeditions all summited, and our basecamp walks and Everest training schools all achieved their goals. We were lucky to have friendly teams of men and women of all ages with excellent leaders, top sherpas, fine food, and good equipment. You can follow how we got on at
www.SummitClimbNews.com .

Just a few weeks ago we returned from our free of cost, no-charge Glacier School; a week of glacier travel and mountain training on the lower 48's most glaciated 14,500 foot peak, with a fun group of men and women of all ages. A wonderful and educational time was had by all. 18 members and 4 leaders reached the summit of this very snowy and beautiful glaciated mountain, on a gorgeous sunny day.

Congratulations to everyone on what has been one of our most successful years ever! Please read about all of the recent exciting news of our walking and climbing expeditions at
www.SummitClimbNews.com & www.SummitTrekNews.com .

AUTUMN NEWS: There is still time to join our friendly groups this year, and also consider 2012. Our trips feature fun teams of men and women of all ages with excellent leaders, top sherpas, fine food, good equipment, and a full-service approach, with everything you need, door to door, at very affordable prices.

Perhaps there is no better time to visit the Himalaya. Not only do the October-November and March-July seasons provide some of the best weather windows of the year, but it is a very good time to climb and explore in Nepal and Tibet, as tourism has dropped to its lowest level in many years, due to the global economic situation. The mountains are very quiet and it has been peaceful for the last 3 years everywhere in Nepal and Tibet. Additionally, we continue to emphasize offering a very high level of service at the most affordable prices.

I have worked for many climbing and trekking companies, and from what I have seen, SummitClimb and SummitTrek have a longstanding history of running good quality affordable climbs and walks in the Himalaya, Aconcagua, and African regions. Their American, British and European leaders, sherpas and staff are very experienced, well trained, and loyal to the company. The food on their trips is delicious, and they spend a lot of money on new equipment each year. Because of their 20 year relationship with all these global people and agencies, inside information, and local knowledge, SummitTrek and SummitClimb seem to have some of the most competitive prices I have seen for the quality and service offered anywhere in the industry.

GIVING BACK TO THOSE IN NEED: If you are interested in the charity and service side, please get involved via donating clothing, books, shoes, climbing equipment, medical supplies and/or funds to the www.MountEverestFoundation.org to support and work together with local families living near Everest with hospitals, schools, environmental, and cultural preservation. If you feel the need to get your hands dirty and help, dig in with our twice yearly www.RemoteNepalServiceWalk.org . On Everest we are also busily working with a team of engineers to design a new biogas project to treat the waste from Everest Basecamp and produce sustainable cooking gas and useful farm fertilizer. This project will have a wide ranging impact not just in the Khumbu Valley, but in high altitude mountain environments everywhere. Please let us know how you would like to become part of the team!

LECTURE NEWS: This winter in February  and March of 2013 you are invited to join our exciting Mt Everest  (9 times)  and Mt. K2  (2 times) leader Dan Mazur and Everest and Cho Oyu summiter Ms. Samantha ‘Squash’ Falconer. They will be presenting beautiful photos and ‘edge of your seat’ action videos telling exciting stories of the climbs, mountains, environments and people they meet, all in the name of raising funds for charity/non-profit causes such as the Mount Everest Foundation for Sustainable Development , helping poor families living near Everest help themselves with Health, Education, Environmental and Cultural Preservation. "Squash", who is 29, loves riding her motorbike from her house to the base of the mountain, climbing up to the summit with ice axe, ropes, and crampons, then jumping off in her paraglider. She has awesome movies and funny inspiring stories.  Dan Mazur is known for turning his Everest team around just below the summit in order to rescue a fallen Australian climber named Lincoln Hall, even when other teams walked past him and did nothing to help. Dan also is known for leading the K2 climb featured in Greg Mortenson's "3 Cups of Tea". Dan spins a fascinating selection of tales about tragedy and triumph on Everest, K2, and the rugged and remote mountains of Pakistan, Tibet, India, Nepal, and Central Asian Republics.

We are currently working to organize a selection of dates during February and March of 2013 throughout the world for these colourful 80 minute live multi-media presentations. Please let us know if you or a friend would like to host Squash and Dan at the venue of your choice. Thank you very much. For more, please visit:

SUMMER TRIPS IN 2013:

MOUNT MUSTAGATA WAS SELECTED BY NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC AS "BEST ADVENTURE DESTINATION 2012". Our leader Jon Otto has climbed Mustagata 9 times and he speaks perfect English and flawless Chinese. Not only that, but due to Jon's expertise, we have our own private basecamp and separate route on the mountain, following the traditional and nearly forgotten route of famed explorers Eric Shipton and Bill Tilman in 1947. At 7500 metres / 24,500 feet Mustagata is the world's 'easiest' peak of its size because the average slope angle is only 18 degrees, equivalent to a "novice" ski piste or run. Climbing Mustagata qualifies you for Everest.
www.MustagataExpedition.com . 15 June to 9 July 2013 and 2014. 25 days in China. Full Service Cost: $5750, £3550, €4450; Basic Climb Cost: $3150, £1950, €2450. Last expedition was a grand success, please go to www.MustagataNews.com .  By the way, all of our Mustagata members use skiis, or snowboards, or snowshoes (raquettes) to ascend the mountain. If you are unfamiliar with these, it’s easy and affordable to rent a pair of our snowshoes (raquettes) on the mountain, which makes the ascent much more fun!

There may be no better preparation for climbing Everest than a prior ascent of Cho Oyu. This will be Dan’s 6th Cho Oyu expedition, and he is looking forward very much to climbing Cho Oyu with you this September. Dan is a relaxed, well organised, and friendly leader who will teach you everything you need to know about high altitude climbing. We feel that Cho Oyu is one of the most beautiful of the world's fourteen "8000 metre / 26,000 foot high peaks”. Cho Oyu is not difficult, in fact it is considered to be the "most-accessible" of the "8000 metre" peaks and relatively easy, very large and located near Everest, so is not to be underestimated. About 1/2 of our members use oxygen for the climb and 1/2 do not, the choice is yours. If you choose to, we offer the "40 percent buyback" where we repurchase unused bottles and equipment returned in good condition, so it is as if you "hired" your oxygen equipment and bottles. The dates and cost are: 2 September to 9 October 2012 and 2013. 38 days in Tibet and Nepal.  NEW LOW PRICE: Full Service Cost: $11,850, £7,450, €8,950, Basic Climb Cost: $6250, £3950, €4750.
