Himalayan Mountain News -  Fun, Friendly Climbs and Walks

Greetings Mountain Friends,

Hi this is Dan Mazur writing to you from www.SummitClimbandTrek.com . At the moment, having just returned from a ski, snowshoe, raquette, and snowboard trip to the high Pamirs in China, I am sitting in a tiny 90 year old cabin on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. The skies are steely grey but the blue waters are calm as wild pink spawning salmon, chased by fat fur seals, return from the big ocean. The tide has gone out and seagulls are combing the beach devouring clams in their beaks. Above town, our snowy white Cascade glacier mountains tower and release their melting snows to fill the abundant rivers. How is your August going? What did you do during July and June?

Welcome to our August newsletter, where we share plans for September, October and November climbs, walks, and charity projects, beginning in just a month. IF YOU HURRY, THERE IS STILL TIME TO JOIN OUR FUN TEAM OF MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL AGES FOR 2013 TRIPS.

By way of introduction, my name is Dan Mazur, and I work for Summit Climb and Summit Trek, now in their 22nd year of summit climbing, high altitude training climbs, and walking to basecamp of our world's highest mountains. I am writing to you just 4 weeks before boarding a plane to Nepal where I will be leading our exciting Cho Oyu expedition, the 6th highest peak on the planet. In just 10 short weeks I will lead our annual Ama Dablam expedition in Nepal, the most famous rock, snow and ice climb in all of Asia.

In early June, I returned to my home on the Pacific Ocean at the base of towering mountains. It was wonderful to reconnect with family after leading a fun and thrilling Everest expedition where ALL of the members, men and women of all ages, and our helpful, polite, expert Sherpas reached the summit in all safety. During late June, we skied and snowboarded in the high peaks on spring snow near home and then in July it was off to China with our www.MustagataExpedition.com , skiing, snowshoeing, raquetting, and snowboarding with friends under good conditions all of the way up to 7000 metres / 23,000 feet in the Chinese Pamirs. During the latter part of July I have been exploring crystalline salt water kayaking through tree lined bays of the Pacific Ocean. Back to Top

Now it’s August and I have plans for an exciting month of glacier training, and rock snow and ice climbing. Will you be joining me for thrilling mountain fun? September is just around the corner and I am excited to travel to exotic Tibet for what is perhaps the best possible preparation for Everest: our inspiring www.ChoOyuClimb.com in September and then in October to friendly Nepal for the learning experience of the www.EverestglacierSchool.com , and www.IslandPeakClimb.com . October Nepal fun continues with our stunning climb of technical but accomplishable www.AmaDablamClimb.com , the most famous rock, snow, and ice peak in all Asia. After much climbing and trekking, I am looking forward to "giving back" to the local people and environments with our First Annual www.ClimateChangeTrek.org in October, www.SherpaClimbingSchool.com in November along with the www.RemoteNepalServiceTrek.com .

URGENT BREAKING NEWS: Our Elbrus team of men and women of all ages just reached the summit of Europe’s highest peak. Congratulations to our members, leader and their family and friends!! SPRING NEWS RECAP: This past April and May I led our Mount Everest Nepal ascent with a team of men and women of all ages and abilities, and expert friendly Sherpas. 100% of my team on Everest Nepal reached the summit in all safety! For the ascent we split into two groups and the strongest fastest members went first with some of our top notch sherpas, while I led the second team to the top very slowly and carefully with another group of superb Sherpas. On the same climbing route we experienced 100% summit success on Lhotse, the world's 4th highest mountain. Our expedition of men and women on the Tibet side of Everest, led by Himalayan veteran Arnold Coster, had the highest success rate of any team, with 11 out of 14 members and 12 Sherpas reaching the top! IN FACT, our Nepal and Tibet Everest teams met each other on the summit on the 23rd of May after not seeing each other for over 40 days since departing Kathmandu. We also had an expedition to Mount Cho Oyu, 6th highest mountain on Earth, located near Everest, considered to be the world's easiest of the 8000 metre, 26,000 foot high mountains, and the best possible preparation for climbing Everest. Our team of women and men of all ages was led by Scott Patch, who has also been instructing our Glacier Schools. On Cho Oyu in May of 2013, ours was the only expedition to reach the summit so far this year. What an honour!

There may be no better preparation for climbing Everest than a prior ascent of Cho Oyu. This will be Dan’s 6th Cho Oyu expedition, and he is looking forward very much to climbing Cho Oyu with you this September. Dan is a relaxed, well organised, and friendly leader who will teach you everything you need to know about high altitude climbing. We feel that Cho Oyu is one of the most beautiful of the world's fourteen "8000 metre / 26,000 foot high peaks”. About 1/2 of our members use oxygen for the climb and 1/2 do not, the choice is yours. If you choose to, we offer the "40 percent buyback" where we repurchase unused bottles and equipment returned in good condition, so it is as if you "hired" your oxygen equipment and bottles. SUMMER TRIPS IN 2014:

MOUNT MUSTAGATA WAS SELECTED BY NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC AS "BEST ADVENTURE DESTINATION 2012". Our leader Jon Otto has climbed Mustagata 9 times and he speaks perfect English and flawless Chinese. Not only that, but due to Jon's expertise, we have our own private basecamp and separate route on the mountain, following the traditional and nearly forgotten route of famed explorers Eric Shipton and Bill Tilman in 1947. At 7500 metres / 24,500 feet Mustagata is the world's 'easiest' peak of its size because the average slope angle is only 18 degrees, equivalent to a "novice" ski piste or run. Climbing Mustagata qualifies you for Everest. www.MustagataExpedition.com . 25 days in China during June and July. Full Service Cost: $5750, £3550, €4450; Basic Climb Cost: $3150, £1950, €2450. Last expedition was a grand success, please go to  www.MustagataNews.com . By the way, all of our Mustagata members use skis, or snowboards, or snowshoes (raquettes) to ascend the mountain. If you are unfamiliar with these, it’s easy and affordable to rent a pair of our snowshoes (raquettes) on the mountain, which makes the ascent much more fun!

MOUNT ELBRUS: 25 July to 4 Aug (11 days). Full Service Cost $3750, £2350, €2850. Elbrus is the highest peak in Europe and one of the fabled "7 Summits" of the world. A great way to see how you feel at high altitude in a short time at an affordable price. Join Everest leader and 7-Summit expert Dan Mazur, who will teach you everything you need to know, for a classic and 'easy' snow walking ascent on a large mountain in a short amount of time. Please contact us now if you are interested! Spaces are filling up quickly.
