Himalayan Summer Newsletter - Climbs, Walks, Hikes, Treks, & Trekking Peaks 2011 & 2012

Greetings Mountain Friends, I hope June is treating you well. What have you been doing? Are you staying fit for upcoming adventures?

I write to you from the roof of a luxurious but inexpensive hotel in ancient Kathmandu. Around me I see snowcapped Himalayan giants towering above lush green foothills. Eagles and ravens soar in the breezes beneath puffy cotton clouds and sparkling blue skies. Prayer flags flutter atop brick houses amidst winding lanes where venerable trees shade children playing marbles and laughing. Car horns toot, prayer bells tinkle, and bicycle pedlars hawk their wares, shouting a sing-song of sales. Golden yellow curries and crispy roasting vegetables waft simmering smells from kitchen windows.

It is now time to join our walks, climbs, and service treks for Autumn 2011. I warmly welcome you to team up with our friendly groups this year, and also consider 2012. Our trips feature fun teams of men and women of all ages with excellent leaders, top sherpas, fine food, good equipment, and a full-service approach, with everything you need, door to door, all at very affordable prices.

In this email, I introduce our team, the SummitClimb and SummitTrek company, explain a bit about how we do things, and then list all of our exciting climbing and walking journeys, as well as educational, health, and environmental projects you could become involved in.

Nepal and Tibet are very peaceful, calm, quiet and alluring at the moment. Tourist numbers are at pre-2008 levels due to the global economy. The political situation is very stable and back to normal. It’s a perfect time to visit, so please come on over. Welcome to our team! back to top

By way of introduction, my name is Dan Mazur, and I work for SummitClimb and SummitTrek, now in their 20th year, which is a long time in the climbing and walking business. I have worked for many outdoor pursuits, climbing, and trekking companies, and from what I have seen, SummitClimb and SummitTrek have a longstanding history of running good quality affordable climbs and walks in the Himalaya, Aconcagua, and African regions. Their British, European, American and Autralian leaders and their sherpas and staff seem to be very experienced, well trained, and loyal to the company. The food on their trips is delicious, and I see they spend a lot of money on new equipment each year. SummitClimb and SummitTrek have offices in Nepal, Tibet, China, UK, USA, and Germany, and it looks like they have also built good rapport with local Nepal, Tibet, and China government climbing and walking permit officials, embassies, visa and border officials, sherpa labour organizations, porters, yak drivers, hotel owners, restaurateurs, and airlines. Because of their 20 year relationship with all these people and agencies, inside information, and local knowledge, SummitTrek and SummitClimb seem to have some of the lower prices I have seen.

Well, enough about my employer already. My JOB is leading high altitude climbs and basecamp walks in the Everest region of Nepal and Tibet. I really can`t complain about what I do for a living. Its an interesting, exciting career with a lot of responsibility that demands good organizational skills and good fitness. Most importantly, you need to enjoy being in the out of doors and working in the mountains with many different types of people from all walks of life, and helping people achieve their potential, safely. back to top

Speaking of responsibility, during February of 2011, I was surprised and pleased to watch a Discovery Channel episode entitled "I Shouldn`t Be Alive", about the role our SummitClimb team played in the rescue of a famous Australian climber from the summit of Everest. Many thanks to Peter Chipping and the Discovery crew who flew out to Kathmandu to interview us and make the programme. back to top

In May of 2011, I was privileged to lead 5 of 6 of our team members (both men and women) to the summits of Everest and her sister peak, Mount Lhotse. In addition, I was fortunate to lead a friendly interesting walking group of ten trekkers to Everest basecamp and also to enjoy the stunning Everest viewing ridge of Kala Patar. Also, this year I was lucky to be at the forefront of a new trip: www.EverestTrainingClimb.com , with a superb team from Australia and Malaysia, where people who had only done walking previously, learned new skills, climbed through Everest`s famed Khumbu Icefall, and reached a highpoint of 7000 metres / 23,000 feet. All in just 16 days, basecamp to basecamp.

In fact, during May of 2011, all of our Everest Nepal, Everest Tibet, Cho Oyu, and Lhotse expeditions reached the summit, and our basecamp walks and Everest training schools all achieved their goals. It was an incredibly lucky season for us and congratulations to everyone!

***PLEASE READ ALL OF THE RECENT EXCITING NEWS AT WWW.SUMMITCLIMBNEWS.COM AND WWW.SUMMITTREKNEWS.COM . Stewart Wolfe, our office director, has been working a lot on the news sites and we urge you to have a look!

This season everyone did their best, but let us also try to do better and give back to local people and environment. Last week I returned from www.RemoteNepalServiceWalk.org . Thanks to concerned and wonderfully kind and caring people around the world, we are working with local families to build several schools and hospitals in poor remote villages, and a greenhouse at Nepal`s oldest convent, near Everest. At the basecamp of our world`s highest mountain, we have teamed up with engineers to design a system to safely recycle waste from Everest into valuable cooking gas and useful farm fertilizer. Please follow our projects at www.MEFnews.com .

One of the villagers we are helping is Maya Sherpa (Nepal`s famous woman climber), and she is married to our seniour SummitClimb leader Arnold Coster (they have a new baby), who has just now set off to lead our www.MustagataClimb.com . Mustagata is known as one of the world`s easiest 7500 metre / 25,000 foot high peaks, and a favourite for skiers, boarders, snowshoers, racquetters, and climbers. Please watch the expedition updates starting on 2 July at SummitClimbNews.com . back to top

Its time for you to confirm your place in our rapidly filling teams for Autumn 2011 and also for Spring and Autumn 2012. Below please find the list of walks, climbs and service treks. The Autumn (and Spring) are normally a wonderfully dry and sunny time to climb and walk in Nepal and Tibet. In fact, we have carefully chosen trip dates in order to take advantage of the season’s best weather windows.

Before joining our team, please be sure you understand everything about the trip, so do ask lots of questions. I am here to answer any and all. I enjoy chatting about mountains, my favourite topic. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL OR TELEPHONE ME. In case I am out climbing and walking when you ring, please do leave a message so I can ring you back. Thank you very much.

After all questions are answered to your (and our) satisfaction, please send your completed and signed application (email is preferable). To find the application, please go to www.SummitClimb.com or www.SummitTrek.com and in the upper right hand corner you can download it from the "Contact/Application" button. Many thanks!

Also, we need your refundable 10% deposit to hold your place in our teams, which fill up rapidly due to our low prices. Regarding our charges, we have made every effort to encourage people to climb and walk in the Himalaya and Aconcagua and Africa by keeping our charges as low as possible. Also, because our company was founded and is run by climbers and walkers we would not feel comfortable charging more than we would be willing to pay ourselves.

I ENCOURAGE YOU TO PAY THE ENTIRE COST OF THE TRIP WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD, make a bank transfer, post a cheque, or pay cash, the choice is yours. back to top
